A: :Yes you do. To be legally riding in India you are required to carry your local driving licence and international Drivers Licence, which must cover the size of bike you will be riding  – 450cc. This will also be a stipulation of any travel insurance company too

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Yes. An IDP is basically an official, multi-language translation of your driving licence. They are cheap, quick and easy to obtain in your home

Do I need Travel Insurance?

Accepted Answer

Travel insurance for a trip like this is a complete essential and is compulsory for you to be able to take part in this tour. Comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers motorcycle riding for the class of motorcycle being ridden is mandatory for all participants. This insurance should include overseas medical expenses, emergency evacuation, repatriation and personal belongings.

Do I need a visa for India?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most travelers need a visa to enter India. Depending on your nationality, you may be able to apply for an e-visa online, which is the most convenient option. It's advisable to check the specific requirements and apply well in advance of your travel to ensure a hassle-free trip.

Where do I fly into?

Accepted Answer

You will need to book return flights to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi DEL.  We will send someone to meet you at the airport – so be sure to give us your full flight details.

How do I carry my main luggage?

Accepted Answer

Your main luggage travels in our support vehicle, so you do not need to strap a large bag to the motorcycle each day.While riding, you only need to carry the essentials you want close at hand, such as your phone, camera, wallet, water and a lightweight jacket or personal items.Depending on the size of the group, one or more support vehicles travel with the tour and also carry tools, spare parts, first aid equipment and other operational gear.

What is the baggage allowance for the flight back to Delhi from Leh?

The standard checked baggage allowance on the domestic flight from Leh to Delhi is generally 15 kg per person.Domestic baggage limits are usually lower than international flights, so we recommend keeping this in mind when packing for the tour.We will provide the latest baggage information to riders before departure.

How big is the group?

Accepted Answer

We keep our India groups relatively small.Most departures have approximately 10 to 15 riders, which allows us to keep the group social without making fuel stops, hotels, meal stops and mountain riding unnecessarily difficult to manage.For private groups or motorcycle clubs, we may be able to accommodate different group sizes.

Will we have a local guide?

Yes.We work with experienced local guides who know the Himalayan region, local roads, mountain conditions, villages and customs extremely well.They work alongside the Aussie Bike or Hike team throughout the tour and are an important part of both the riding experience and the day-to-day logistics.

Will a mechanic be riding or driving with us?

Accepted Answer

Yes.Our local support team includes experienced motorcycle mechanics who travel with the tour.They may ride with the group or travel in the support vehicle depending on the day and conditions.The support team carries tools and a range of common spare parts so that many minor mechanical issues can be dealt with while we are on the road.

Do I need to take water with me?

Definitely.Staying hydrated is especially important as we climb into the higher sections of the Himalayas.Drinking water is carried in the support vehicle and available during our stops, but we also recommend carrying water with you on the motorcycle.We generally suggest using sealed bottled water. It is easy to replace, easy to check and avoids the problem of trying to thoroughly clean a hydration bladder if it becomes contaminated during the trip.

How can I avoid altitude sickness?

Altitude is one of the unique challenges of this tour.Our itinerary is designed so that we gain elevation progressively, giving riders time to acclimatise as we travel higher into the Himalayas.Even very fit people can experience altitude symptoms, so we encourage everyone to take it seriously.Drink plenty of water, get adequate rest, avoid excessive alcohol and let your tour leader know immediately if you begin experiencing symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue or shortness of breath.Some travellers choose to discuss altitude medication with their doctor before travelling.We strongly recommend speaking with your GP or a travel medicine specialist before the tour if you have any concerns about altitude.

What riding kit should I wear?

Riders must bring their own riding gear.This is primarily an adventure-road motorcycle tour, so adventure or touring-style equipment is ideal.At a minimum we recommend:Full-face or flip-front helmetProtective motorcycle jacketProtective motorcycle pantsMotorcycle glovesProper riding bootsWarm base layersNeck warmerWaterproof layer if your gear is not waterproofWeather conditions can vary dramatically.At lower elevations it may be warm, while high mountain passes can be cold even during the middle of the day.Good quality layered riding gear gives you the flexibility to adjust as conditions change.

Your vaccination requirements will depend on your personal medical history and current travel health recommendations.India may require or recommend certain vaccinations depending on where you are travelling and your previous immunisations.We recommend speaking with your GP or a travel medicine clinic well before departure.They can give you advice based on the latest health information and your individual circumstances.

How much spending money will I need to bring with me?

You won't need a large amount because most of the major tour expenses are already included.Personal spending is generally for things such as:DrinksSouvenirsSnacksTipsPersonal shoppingMeals during designated free timeFor many riders, around AUD $400 to $500 is enough for general spending, although everyone is different.If you enjoy shopping or collecting souvenirs, you may want to allow a little extra.

Are there ATMs on the way?

Yes, particularly in larger towns and cities.However, ATMs become less common once we move into remote Himalayan areas, and banking networks are not always reliable.We recommend withdrawing enough cash before heading into the more isolated parts of the tour.It is also worth letting your bank know you are travelling overseas and checking that your cards are enabled for international transactions.

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation is one of the areas where we refuse to cut corners.There are plenty of cheaper ways to run a motorcycle tour through India, and one of the easiest ways to reduce the price is to use the cheapest accommodation available.That is not how we operate.After a full day riding through the Himalayas, the last thing we want is for our riders to arrive tired, hungry and dusty only to find an uncomfortable bed, questionable food or a room that doesn't feel clean and welcoming.We spend extra time selecting good-quality hotels with clean rooms, comfortable beds, hot showers, good facilities and, importantly, reputable food and kitchens.In the larger cities, we stay in quality modern hotels. As we travel into the more remote parts of the Himalayas, the choices naturally become more limited, but we still go out of our way to secure some of the best accommodation available in each area.That often means paying more than some other tour operators, but we believe it is worth it.A great motorcycle tour is not just about where you ride during the day. It is also about where you arrive at night.You should be able to get off the bike, have a good meal, enjoy a hot shower, relax with the group and get a proper night's sleep before doing it all again the next morning.We don't aim to be the cheapest India motorcycle tour. We aim to deliver a better overall experience — and the quality of our accommodation is a big part of that.

How do I charge my Phone / camera?

Our hotels have electricity available for charging phones, cameras, helmet intercoms and other devices. There are 2 types of sockets in India – 3 Pin connections – Type D, or 2 pin connections Type C.

Is Wi-Fi available throughout the tour?

Yes.All of the hotels we stay in have Wi-Fi, and most of the restaurants we stop at along the way also provide internet access.In the larger towns and cities, the connection is generally quite good. As we travel further into the Himalayas, speeds can vary and the internet may occasionally be slower or less reliable due to the remote location.

Can I get an Indian SIM card?

You can.A local SIM card or eSIM can be useful in the larger towns and populated areas.However, mobile coverage is limited in many of the remote Himalayan regions we travel through.Most riders use mobile data when available and hotel Wi-Fi when they can.It is a good idea to download important documents, maps and entertainment before the tour begins.

Is it safe to drink the tap water?

We recommend drinking sealed bottled water only.Always check the seal before opening a bottle.We also recommend using bottled water when brushing your teeth, particularly while your body is adjusting to travelling in India.Taking a little extra care with food and water can make a big difference to how much you enjoy the tour.

Absolutely.India is one of the easiest countries in the world for vegetarian travellers, and there are excellent vegetarian choices almost everywhere we travel.

What if I have a food allergy or intolerance?

Please tell us before the tour.We will make every reasonable effort to communicate dietary requirements to hotels and restaurants.However, food preparation practices can vary, particularly in remote areas, so we cannot guarantee that every kitchen will be completely free of allergens or cross-contamination.If you have a serious allergy, make sure you carry any prescribed medication with you while riding rather than leaving it in your main luggage.You should also make sure the tour leaders are aware of your allergy.

How do I secure my place?

A AUD $1000 non-refundable deposit secures your position on the tour.The remaining balance is due 90 days before departure.Our India tours have limited rider numbers, so once a departure is full, bookings close.If the Roof of the World is on your bucket list, booking early is the best way to avoid missing out.
